Rajendra Mal Lodha to be the next CJI

New Delhi, Apr 11 (IBNS): Rajendra Mal Lodha is all set to become the next Chief Justice of India, the Indian government said on Friday.

Lodha, Judge of the Supreme Court, assume his new charge on Apr 27.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Rajendra Mal Lodha, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 27th April, 2014," the Indian Ministry of Law & Justice said in a statement.

Born on Sept 28, 1949 in Jodhpur city, Lodha had enrolled with Bar Council of Rajasthan in 1973.

He had practiced Law in the Rajasthan High Court and dealt with all branches of law; Constitutional, civil, company, Criminal, Taxation, Labour, among others.

Lodha was elevated as a Permanent Judge of Rajasthan High Court on Jan 31, 1994.

He was transferred to Bombay High Court where he assumed office on Feb 16, 1994.

As a Judge, Bombay High Court for thirteen years, he sat on almost all jurisdictions.

He was re-transferred to Rajasthan High Court where he assumed office on Feb 2, 2007. He had been Administrative Judge of Rajasthan High Court.

Lodha was sworn in as Chief Justice of Patna High Court on May 13, 2008.

He was elevated as a Judge of Supreme Court of India on Dec 17 , 2008.

The current  Chief Justice of India is  P. Sathasivam.
