Rajya Sabha : Cong alleges two kinds of 500-rupee notes, says biggest scam of century

New Delhi, Aug 8 (IBNS) : A huge uproar over the opposition's allegation of two types of 500 rupee notes printed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) forced adjournment in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, reports said.

Displaying images of two . 500-rupee  notes in the Rajya Sabha, Congress members claimed that they were of different sizes and designs.

Congress leader  Kapil Sibal alleged that it was the  "biggest scam of the century".

"Today we have discovered why the Government took the demonetisation decision. The RBI prints two types of currency notes. These are of different size and different design... how is it possible?" he asked.

Senior Congress member Ghulam Nabi Azad alleged that there are also two kinds of 2000 rupee notes.

The Congress was backed by Janata Dal United, Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders.

However, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley alleged that Congress was making "irresponsible statements".

Jaitley later said he would verify the authenticity of the notes. "Given such a big print run there can be an odd case of a currency note being slightly bigger or not," he told NDTV.
