Rajya Sabha passes RTI Amendment Bill despite protests by opposition
New Delhi, Jul 25 (IBNS): Despite oppositions' objections, the Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed the Right To Information (Ammendment) Bill, 2019 seeking significant changes to the transparency law.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to seek the support of his Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
The Congress party staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha before the voting.
The RTI bill, on introduction, stimulated sharp exchanges in the House on Thursday.
The opposition demanded that it be referred to a select committee.
The proposed law was passed on Monday in the Lok Sabha.
The RTI changes will allow the government to decide the tenure, salary, allowances and other terms of service of the Information Commissioners at the Centre and states.
