S Jiashankar, world leaders mourn loss of lives in South Korea's stampede

World leaders offered their condolences on the death of 151 people in a deadly stampede in South Korea's capital Seoul at a Halloween event where revelers, mostly in their teens and twenties, gathered in massive numbers.

The disastrous incident occurred as at least 100,000 revelers gathered in a narrow lane Saturday night in Itaewon, a central district of Seoul, lined with hundreds of shops and some very narrow streets.

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar condoled the tragic deaths assuring India's solidarity with the grieving people of South Korea, saying he was "deeply shocked" by the loss of young lives.

US President Joe Biden also expressed his grief over the loss of lives and wished for the speedy recovery of those injured in the incident.

French President Emmanuel Macron also mourned the tragedy, assuring France's support for the Korean people.

"A heartfelt thought this evening for the inhabitants of Seoul and for all the Korean people after the tragedy of Itaewon. France is at your side," Macron tweeted in French and Korean.

Rishi Sunak, the newly-appointed prime minister of UK,  also expressed his sorrow over the tragic crush in a Twitter post.

Condoling the deaths, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau wished a speedy recovery to the victims of the deadly accident.

On Sunday, South Korea's President Yoon Suk-yeol declared a period of national mourning. The government would bear the cost of medical care for those injured and the funerals of those killed in the dealy incident, he told the mourning nation.
 
The government "will thoroughly investigate the cause of the incident and make fundamental improvements to ensure the same accident does not occur again in the future," the President said.
