Sarbananda Sonowal files his nomination papers for Rajya Sabha bypolls in Assam
Guwahati/IBNS: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday filed his nomination for ensuing Rajya Sabha bypolls in Assam.
The BJP nominated Sonowal as party candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat polls from Assam scheduled to be held on Oct 4.
Sonowal had submitted his nomination papers before the returning officer of the by-polls in Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati and he was accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, leaders of BJP’s ally parties AGP and UPPL, several ministers, MPs, MLAs.
The Union Minister for shipping, ports, waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal currently represents the Majuli assembly constituency as he won the last assembly polls in the state.
It necessitated his election from the Rajya Sabha after Sonowal was inducted in the Modi cabinet in July.
The Rajya Sabha seat was vacated by Biswajit Daimary – current assembly speaker, who contested the last assembly election on a BJP ticket after switching from the Bodoland People’s Front (BJP).
Meanwhile, the oppositions have decided that they will not put any candidate against Sonowal in the Rajya Sabha by-polls.
