SC dismisses CBI appeal to reopen Bofors case
New Delhi, Nov 2 (IBNS) : In a development that could have bearing on the present national politics, the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed an appeal by the Central Bureau of Investigtigation (CBI) to reopen the Rs. 64 crore Bofors pay-off case.
A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice K M Joseph rejected the plea on the ground of "inordinate delay"-4,522 days.
The central agency, on February 2 this year, had filed an appeal after a 13-year delay against the Delhi High Court decision quashing charges against all the accused on May 31, 2005.
BJP leader and advocate Ajay Agrawal, who is pursuing the matter for over a decade, had filed an appeal in the top court in 2005 itself after the CBI had failed to challenge the high court's order within the mandatory 90 days period.
The SC verdict comes at a time when the Congress has taken up the alleged corruption in Rafale fighter jet deal as a big issue before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
