'Shocking': Nusrat Jahan attacks Yogi Adityanath over women's safety in UP as he campaigns for Bengal polls

Kolkata/IBNS: Trinamool Congress MP and Bengali film actress Nusrat Jahan on Tuesday attacked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the increasing number of violent crimes against women in his state.

She asked Adityanath that why is he failing to prioritize the safety and security of women in his state.

Nusrat also slammed the ruling BJP in UP for concentrating only on the upcoming Bengal elections rather than providing safety to women of the north Indian state.

In a tweet quoting an NDTV report, Nusrat tweeted: "SHOCKING! Cannot find the words to describe the horror that @BJP4India  ruled Uttar Pradesh has turned into! WHY couldn't @myogiadityanath prioritize the safety & security of this family? Is Bengal elections more important to BJP?
#BJPHataoBetiBachao"

The tweet referred to a news report which stated of an incident from UP's Hathras where a man accused of sexually assaulting a young woman allegedly shot her father dead.

The tweet was posted on a day when Yogi Adityanath - whose government is under fire for failing to protect women - campaigned for the BJP in Bengal's Malda district ahead of the Assembly polls.

The controversial BJP leader hurled a host of charges at Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He said the state had descended into lawlessness and anarchy.

"There is anarchy in Bengal... the citizens are pained. Security is a huge concern. We need to ensure change in Bengal..." Yogi Adityanath told voters.

Following the accusations, TMC leaders Firhad Hakim and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar tweeted videos of the Hathras incident with the hashtag "BJP Hatao, Beti Bachao" - a sarcastic reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's campaign- "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao".

"Count of dreadful incidents from BJP-ruled UP is unending! The people of UP are suffering as the state of law and order is in shackles, yet Yogi Adityanath is in Bengal??" TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar tweeted.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Mayor and state cabinet minister Firhad Hakim tweeted: "I fail to understand how the safety & security of this lady's family could not be prioritized for a CM but Bengal polls? Certainly! Curious if Bengal BJP leaders imagine Mr Yogi Adityanath to be the "protector" of women's security and rights in Bengal!"

UP's Hathras was in news in September last year when a 20-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly gangraped by four men from the upper caste.

The girl died from her injuries at Delhi's AIIMS. The horrific incident triggered outrage across the country and put Yogi Adityanath and UP Police under fire.
