Six Iranian citizens, including four men and two women, were arrested by the police while they were attempting to enter Nepal on forged documents on the Sunauli border in Maharajganj district in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, police sources said.

Police sources said that Sirous Rahimizadeh, Ghadam Kheyr Eghbalzadeh, Asal Malayeri Nayeb Moghol, and two minors were intercepted by the security agencies on the basis of suspicion.

"Preliminary investigation revealed that the visas of the Iranian citizens expired in May, and since then they have been living illegally in India," they said.

Police sources said that it was found that the arrested persons were trying to cross the border on the basis of forged stamps on their visas.

"When checked during immigration, the stamp on their visas was found to be fake," they said.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Atish Singh said that a case under the Foreigners Act and other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been lodged against the arrested persons, and they have been sent to jail.
