Smoke triggers panic among commuters in Kolkata Metro's Dum Dum station
Kolkata, Jan 31 (IBNS): At least three passengers fell sick after heavy smoke engulfed a non-AC Kolkata Metro coach at Dum Dum metro station in northern part of the city on Thursday morning, reports said.
According to reports, when a crowded Kavi Subhas- bound non-AC metro rake was leaving Dum Dum station at around 10:55 am, sparks and smoke were spotted underneath a coach.
The train was immediately halted and Kolkata Metro staffers along with Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel evacuated all passengers from the train.
Three passengers fell sick due to the smoke and after being rescued, they were rushed to a local hospital, a Metro official said.
"The rake has been sent to Noapara carshed for examination and after primary inquiry, we are suspecting that the smoke started following a flash in the third rail, which carries power," a senior Metro official told IBNS.
"The exact reason behind the spark and smoke will be confirmed after a proper investigation," the official said.
"Our emergency alarm worked properly today and our staffers took prompt action to evacuate and rescue passengers from the train," he added.
Due to the incident, metro service was partly disrupted for nearly half-an-hour during the peak office hours.
Earlier on Dec 28 last year, at least 47 passengers fell ill after an AC rake of Kolkata metro was engulfed in smoke following a fire incident inside a tunnel between Maidan and Rabindra Sadan stations.
