Sri Lanka to release 78 arrested Indian fishermen
New Delhi, June 9 (IBNS): The Sri Lankan government on Monday said that it will release 78 Indian fishermen who were arrested by the country's Navy for "illegally" poaching in Sri Lanka's waters.
Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa tweeted, "On the occasion of the 1st joint sitting of Indian Parliament, I have instructed officials to release the 78 Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody."
The Sri Lankan Navy on Saturday arrested 78 Indian fishermen along with 16 Indian fishing trawlers for poaching in Sri Lankan waters.
The move to release the Indian fishermen comes a day after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding action against the Sri Lanka government.
Meanwhile, India also released 13 Sri Lankan fishermen from its custody.
"I welcome #India’s release of 13 #SriLankan fishermen today," Rajapaksa tweeted.
"I look forward to the release of all remaining #SriLankan fishermen in #Indian custody at the earliest," he added.
