A powerful storm killed 89 people and injured dozens across several districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Lucknow/IBNS: At least 89 people were killed and 53 others injured after a powerful storm accompanied by heavy rain, dust and strong winds swept across several districts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday evening.

The storm uprooted trees, damaged homes, disrupted road traffic, and knocked out electricity and communication networks, prompting large-scale rescue and restoration efforts.

Death toll jumps overnight

Officials said the number of fatalities rose sharply from 27 to 89 overnight as district administrations compiled updated casualty figures.

Prayagraj recorded the highest number of deaths, with 21 people killed.

Sant Ravidas Nagar reported 14 deaths, followed by Fatehpur with 11 and Mirzapur with 10.

Six people died in Unnao, while five fatalities were reported from Badaun.

Bareilly and Pratapgarh recorded four deaths each.

Two deaths each were reported from Hardoi, Kanpur Dehat, Sonbhadra and Sambhal.

Three people died in Sitapur, while Basti, Raebareli and Shahjahanpur reported one death each.

Prayagraj suffers the heaviest loss

Prayagraj bore the brunt of the storm, with widespread destruction reported in Handia, Phulpur, Soraon and Meja.

Officials said seven people died in Handia, four in Phulpur, three in Soraon and two in Meja.

Strong winds uprooted large trees and brought down ageing branches across the city, blocking major roads and severely affecting traffic movement.

Municipal Corporation Junior Engineer Vinod Patel said fallen trees were reported from several key locations, including Patthar Girjaghar, Ashok Nagar, Kachahari Road and Mahatma Gandhi Marg.

The storm also caused extensive damage near the Triveni Sangam, where temporary huts used by pilgrimage priests were blown away.

Power, communication networks hit

Electricity supply was disrupted in several parts of Prayagraj as trees and debris damaged the power infrastructure.

Officials said restoration work was underway, although mobile network disruptions complicated rescue and assessment efforts.

Tin sheds and solar panels were ripped off buildings, while collapsing walls crushed parked vehicles in multiple locations.

All members of a family killed

One of the deadliest incidents occurred in Khargasenpur village in Sant Ravidas Nagar district, where a tree fell on a house.

Four members of a family, including a woman and her three daughters, were killed in the collapse.

Police and district officials continued relief and rescue operations in the area.

Additional District Magistrate Kunwar Virendra Kumar Maurya said teams of sub-divisional magistrates, tehsildars and police personnel were conducting inspections across all affected tehsils.

Multiple fatalities reported in Badaun

Earlier reports from Badaun confirmed five deaths and several injuries in separate storm-related incidents.

In Siddhpur Kaitholi village under Bisoli police station, two girls, Mausami, 10, and Rajni, 9, were killed when a mud wall collapsed on a hut where they had taken shelter.

Two women, identified as Kallo and Neha, sustained serious injuries.

In Tark Paroli village, a 40-year-old woman named Laxmi died after a tree fell on a tubewell room, causing the roof to collapse.

Three others were injured, including Geeta, whose condition remained critical.

In another incident near Bilsi Road, truck driver Yogesh, 32, died after a eucalyptus tree fell on his vehicle.

Anshul Sharma, 22, also died after a tree collapsed on him while he was delivering food to his father during the storm.

Rescue operations continue

Authorities said the casualty count could rise further as assessment teams continue to gather information from affected districts.

Emergency crews remain deployed to clear roads, restore electricity, and repair damaged communication lines in some of the worst-hit areas of the state.
