Strong quake hits Afghanistan, tremors felt in India, PM Modi seeks urgent assessment

New Delhi, Oct 26 (IBNS): As the northern part of India was jolted on Monday by a strong earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter Scale, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked for an urgent assessment of the same while stating that the country is ready to provide assistance to the neighbouring affected Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The quake had its epicentre in the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan. Major tremors were even felt in Pakistan.
 
Tremors were also felt in Delhi, Kashmir, Haryana and Punjab, media reports said.
 
"Heard about strong earthquake in Afghanistan-Pakistan region whose tremors have been felt in parts of India. I pray for everyone's safety," PM Modi tweeted.
 
"I have asked for an urgent assessment and we stand ready for assistance where required, including Afghanistan & Pakistan," he tweeted.
 
According to latest media reports, 11 people died in Afghanistan while about 80 have been injured.
 
People rushed out of offices and homes in Delhi as well as in Chandigarh.
 
Metro services have been temporarily halted in the national capital.
 
In Srinagar, phone and electricity lines are down.
