New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Delhi High Court to hear student activist Sharjeel Imam's bail plea in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case "expeditiously", media reports said.

The riots had broken out during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the national capital. The riots had left 53 dead and over 700 injured.

Imam was booked under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

A bench comprising Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma observed as quoted by Live Law, "Petitioner shall be at liberty to request the High Court to hear the bail application as expeditiously as possible on the next date and it is expected that the High Court shall consider the said request."

Sharjeel, who was a student at Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), was booked under UAPA for allegedly conspiring to cause riots in NorthEast Delhi in 2020.

The accused was taken into custody on January 28, 2020.
