‘Take Gyanesh Kumar to the US’: Congress mocks Trump over praise for India’s voter ID system

New Delhi/IBNS: The Congress has taken a jibe at US President Donald Trump after he praised India's voter identification system and expressed his support for adopting a similar model in the United States.

What’s the matter?

Recalling a recent meeting with India's Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, Trump, in a post on Truth Social, called for the SAVE America Act to adopt a voting model similar to India's.

Trump wrote, “Earlier this month, India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, asked our Administration — How can you have Elections in the U.S. without a valid Photo ID?

“India’s last Election had 646,000,000 Voters! Less than 1% voted by mail, and every single Voter had to have a VALID Photo Identity Document. We need to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, now!”

Congress takes a dig at Trump

Congress leader Pawan Khera hit back at Trump over his remarks, using sarcasm to suggest that the US President should take CEC Gyanesh Kumar to the US along with India's electronic voting machines (EVMs).

Khera posted on X, “Dear @realDonaldTrump, Please take Gyanesh Kumar Gupta to America. And keep him there. We will send our EVMs too by the next available flight. For all the insults and bullying you’ve sent our way, this is the least we can do for you. To SIR With Love, from India.”

Khera's remarks appeared to reference the Congress's long-standing criticism of the Election Commission's handling of elections and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

Trump backs SAVE America Act

Trump has repeatedly pushed for stricter voter identification requirements in the US.

The SAVE America Act, short for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, seeks to require proof of US citizenship for voter registration in federal elections and impose stricter identification requirements for voting.

Trump's latest comments praising India's voter ID system have now triggered a political exchange in India, with the Congress using the remarks to target both the US President and the Election Commission.
