| | Jul 29, 2015, at 09:06 pm
Kabul, July 29 (IBNS) Taliban leader of Aghanistan, Mullah Mohammed Omar, has died two to three years ago, said a BBC report on Wednesday quoting Afghan officials even as the militant group has not yet corroborated the same.

According to Afghan government and intelligence sources quoted by BBC, he died two-three years ago, but no further information was made available.

A Taliban spokesman contacted by the BBC said the group would issue a statement shortly.

There have been several reports of his death earlier.

After the U.S.-led War in Afghanistan started in October 2001, Omar went into hiding. He was at large and it was believe that he was hiding in the Pashtun tribal region of Afghanistan or Pakistan.

Mullah Omar is the supreme commander and the spiritual leader of the Taliban.

He was Afghanistan's 11th head of state from 1996 to late 2001, under the official title "Head of the Supreme Council". He held the title Commander of the Faithful of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, which was recognized by only three nations: Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
