Tamil Nadu Governor appoints DMK chief MK Stalin the next chief minister
Chennai/IBNS: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief MK Stalin has been appointed as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu by governor Banwarilal Purohit, the Raj Bhavan announced on Wednesday.
“Thiru MK Stalin called in the honourable governor of Tamil Nadu today at Raj Bhavan and submitted a letter intimating his election as the leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Legislature Party,” the Raj Bhavan communique said.
“The honourable governor of Tamil Nadu appointed him as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu and invited him to form the ministry and to have a swearing-in ceremony on May 7, 2021, at 9am at Raj Bhavan, Chennai,” it added.
Stalin met the governor to stake claim to form the next government in Tamil Nadu after a comprehensive in the recently concluded single phase assembly elections.
The counting of votes for all 234 assembly constituencies took place on May 2.
The DMK-led alliance won 159 seats, crossing the majority mark of 118 with a significant margin. The party in its own capacity won 133 seats, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI) website.
Sixty eight-year-old Stalin will become Tamil Nadu's eighth chief minister after he is sworn-in on Friday.
He is the son of former five-term chief minister, the late M Karunanidhi, and took over as the second president of the DMK after his death in August 2018.
