"Congress has always encouraged younger people to lead the party. Time has come for Rahul Gandhi to take charge of the party," Singh told reporters.

The Congress, however, said it was Singh's personal remark.

Congress leader and former Union Minister Anand Sharma told media: "These are his personal views....Sonia Ganadhi is the source of our inspiration. Rahul mobilises the youth. He is our future. Both give us strength."

Congress suffered a massive blow in the Lok Sabha polls earlier this year where it won only 44 seats.
