New Delhi, June 10 (IBNS): Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s Kapil Mishra is likely to be Delhi's new law minister after Jitender Singh Tomar resigned from the post late on Tuesday over charges of possessing a fake law degree, media reports said on Wednesday.

Tomar has been taken to Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh to take part in the investigation over his alleged faked degrees.

Tomar was taken by train to Faizabad, which is about 700 km away from Delhi.

According to reports, police are expected to validate a BSc degree that Tomar claims he got from the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University.

Meanwhile, AAP lawyers have moved a sessions court for Tomar's bail.

They are also seeking a revision of the trial court order that sent had Tomar to four days in custody.

"My degrees are absolutely genuine. It is a conspiracy by the BJP and the central government," Tomar  told reporters on Wednesday morning.

Congress activists are also staging a protest in Delhi demanding Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's resignation.

Hours after he was arrested and sent to police custody, Delhi Law Minister  Jitender Singh Tomar on Tuesday resigned from his post.

His resignation has been accepted by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

Delhi's Deputy CM Manish Sisodia told reporters: "His resignation has been accepted by the CM."

A Delhi court earlier sent Tomar to four-day's police custody.

Tomar was in a meeting in his constituency when police arrested him and took him away.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), meanwhile, accused the Modi government of targeting its leaders for opposing the Centre's policies.

"Those who oppose Modi govt have to pay the price.Tomorrow don't be surprised if AAP leaders are killed in road accidents. But we will fight," AAP leader Ashutosh tweeted.

According to reports, Tomar has been charged under various IPC sections including 420 (cheating). He has also been charged under IPC sections 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery with purpose of cheating) and 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy).

Tomar has claimed that he got his Bachelor of Science degree from Avadh University in Faizabad and LLB or bachelor of law from the Bishwanath Singh Institute of Legal Study College, Munger, affiliated to the Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University in Bihar.

Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University had informed the Delhi High Court that Tomar's law degree is fabricated. The institute had claimed that Tomar's law degree does not exist in their records.

The Delhi Police has alleged that a nearly month-long investigation has revealed that Tomar not only submitted a fake science graduation degree and law mark sheets to register with the Bar Council of Delhi, but also forged a migration certificate.
