Trump's disclosure marks huge policy shift of India on Kashmir issue: Mehbooba Mufti
Srinagar, Jul 23 (UNI) Reacting to the statement of US President Donald Trump that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked him to mediate in the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said despite India refuting the idea of third party mediation on the state, the disclosure made by Trump, marks a huge policy shift.
Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, the president of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) posted,"Despite GOI refuting idea of third party mediation on J&K, the disclosure made by Trump marks a huge policy shift.
'Even though the US doesn't hold a great record in resolving protracted conflicts, hope both countries seize this opportunity to forge peace through dialogue,' she added.
After a meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, Trump on Monday said that Mr Modi, during the G20 summit in Osaka, had sought his help in resolving the Kashmir issue.
However, in Parliament, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Tuesday asserted that no request to mediate on Kashmir issued was made by Modi to the US President. However, the Opposition political parties have asked Mr Modi, to clear the air on the issue.
