Trying hard to ensure party does not split : Mulayam Singh

| | Jan 11, 2017, at 09:28 pm
New Delhi, Jan 11 (IBNS) : Even as the bitter intra-party feue of the Samajwadi Party refused to die down, party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav on Wednesday said he is working tirelessly to avoid a split.

"This party is born out of struggle, so your worries are  understandable. I am trying to ensure unity in my party. I will not take names, but people are trying to cause a split," Mulayam said while addressing a press conference.

He asserted that  neither he and his brother Shivpal was going to form a separate party and the party's symbol, 'cycle,' , which has been the bone of contention between the two warring factions-one led by his son and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, will remain the same.

"Neither we are forming a separate party, nor are we changing our symbol."

Party founder Mulayam and his brother Shivpal are heading one camp, while son Akhilesh and Mulayam's cousin Ram Gopal Yadav are spearheading the other side.

Both factions have recently met with Election Commission officials staking claim to the 'cycle.'

"Shivpal had to go underground during the emergency. Whatever I had, I have given away. I am left with nothing but party workers," Mulayam said.

Earlier, Mulayam had waved  an olive branch at Akhilesh and the faction-war seemed to come to an end.

But a reconciliation formula could not be reached as the position of the party president remains a bottleneck for both father-son and the party.
