Tuticorin/Chennai, May 24 (IBNS): The death toll in the violent protest against Sterlite's copper plant in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin rose to 13 on Thursday, media reports said.

Meanwhile, the violence during the protest left at least 100 people injured.

Earlier in the day, the Tamil Nadu government disconnected power supply to the Sterlite Copper plant.

The violence erupted surrounding protests about the plant's expansion.

On Wednesday too, protesters turned violent, setting fire to a police vehicle and pelting cops on duty with stones.

Digital media videos showing alleged police atrocities during the violence has also fuelled discontent across the state, media reports said.

The local administration has suspended internet services in Tuticorin and two other neighbouring districts since Wednesday evening to restore calm.

According to reports, the services will not be available for the next five days.

The state government has also transferred the police chief and the District Collector of Tuticorin late on Wednesday.

Prohibitory orders are also in place in parts of Tuticorin.
