Srinagar/IBNS: Security forces shot dead two unidentified militants in a gunfight in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, police said.

The encounter erupted at Poshkreeri area when joint forces were carrying out a cordon and a search operation following an input about militant presence.

“As the joint team of forces were approaching towards the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists fired upon them, triggering the gunfight. Two terrorist have been killed so far,” a police officer said.

“The search operation is still underway.”

The identity and group affiliation of those slain could not be established immediately.

This is the second gunfight in south Kashmir in the last 24 hours.

On Monday a brief gun battle broke out in Shopian district.

The militants, however, managed to escape and the operation was called off Tuesday after no further contact.
