Rai Bareli, May 7 (UNI) Famous as the Indian National Congress's bastion in the country, the Rai Bareli parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh recorded higher polling percentage as compared to the earlier Lok Sabha polls, in the voting that took place on Monday.

United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson and sitting MP Sonia Gandhi is directly pitted against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh. In 2014, Rai Bareli recorded about 51 per cent votes whereas this time, 56.23 per cent votes were cast, although on Monday evening, the Election Commission had announced the polling percentage as 53.68.

The residents of Rai Bareli seemed to be enthused on the day of exercising their franchise when queues started to be witnessed at several polling centers from 0700 hrs and people cast votes amidst the sweltering heat.

Meanwhile, there were sporadic incidents which garnered attention. Voting was affected at Kasauli's booth number 76 and Rajkiya Inter College Semri's booth number 51 due to technical snags but the officials changed the EVM machine and re-polling took place.

Rai Bareli is one of the high-profile seats of the country and in the maiden Lok Sabha elections, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's husband Feroze Gandhi had secured victory from here, thus opening the grand-old-party's account here which still remains intact.

Only thrice has any other party, except Congress has won from here and that too, when any 'Gandhi family' member did not contest the elections.

Sonia Gandhi has continued to win the seat from the year 2004 whereas BJP's Dinesh Pratap recently left the Congress.
