Uttarakhand: Bus mishap leaves 16 dead
Dehradun: At least 16 people lost their lives after a bus fell into a gorge near Damta on Yamunotri Highway in Uttarkashi of Uttarakhand on Sunday.
Police said the bus was carrying 40 passengers.
They said officials have reached the spot and started the rescue operation.
As per Radha Raturi, Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Uttarakhand, the passengers included 28 people hailing from Panna district of Madhya Pradesh, including the driver and helper.
Out of these, 25 were confirmed dead, while three were critically injured. Besides, two were being searched at the accident site. The injured have been taken to Damta CHC, three km from the accident site, where senior doctors from Barkot have arrived for their treatment.
She said the rescue work was in progress by Uttarakhand Police, Home Guard, SDERF and Collector SP Uttarkashi.
The ACS said she was in constant touch with Uttarkashi Collector Abhishek Rohilla and SP Uttarkashi Arpan Yaduvanshi regarding rescue work and treatment of the injured.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences over the incident.
The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF for the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the accident in Uttarakhand. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000 each.

"Under the supervision of the state government, the local administration is engaged in all possible assistance on the spot," said a tweet posted by the Prime Minister's Office.
