Volcano erupts in central Japan

Tokyo, Sep 27 (IBNS): A volcano erupted in central Japan on Saturday injuring at least eight people, media reports said. It forced aircraft to divert flying routes in order to avoid the billowing ash cloud.

The Meteorological Agency said Mt. Ontake that straddles Nagano and Gifu prefectures erupted at around 11:53 am, sending smoke down the mountain’s south slope for more than 3-km, news agency Reuters reported.

Mt. Ontake is located about 200-km west of Tokyo.

At least seven people received minor injuries while one person was seriously injured owing to the volcanic eruption. Airplanes were also directed to divert their flying routes.
