WB: Youth held for FB post against TMC leader, granted bail later

Kolkata/Jalpaiguri, Feb 7 (IBNS): A youth was allegedly arrested on Friday for posting a Facebook status against local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader at Malbazar in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.
The youth- Rohit Pashi- reportedly posted a Facebook status where he had slammed local TMC leader Pulin Golder, without taking his name directly, over an accident.

Alleging that the Facebook post was defamatory and a conspiracy of CPI-M, local TMC councilor Pulin Golder lodged a complaint at the local police station against Pashi on Friday and he was immediately arrested.

However, when Pashi was produced at a local court in Malbazar on Saturday, the judge granted him bail.

Denying the allegation, Jalpaiguri SP Akash Megharia told IBNS, "We did not arrest Rohit Pashi. As we had information that he might create trouble, we just ordered him to execute a bond under CrPC section 107 (Security for keeping the peace in other cases)."

West Bengal CPI-M's general secretary Surya Kanta Mishra said, "The incident of cartoon-arrest repeats itself. Rohit Pashi arrested for speaking against the autocrat. It's a complete reign of terror."

Jadavpur University (JU) professor Ambikesh Mahapatra, who was earlier nabbed in 2012 for circulating WB chief minister Mamata Banerjee's cartoon, told IBNS: "Such incidents are being repeated continuously. It's an example of extreme intolerance. This should be stopped."
