West Bengal Cogress turns volte-face over TMC MP arrest

Kolkata, Jan 4 (IBNS): Changing its stand within 24 hours, West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) on Wednesday supported Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s statement on its Parliamentary leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay's arrest.

After TMC LS MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday, Trinamool leadership called the arrest a political vendetta of BJP-ruled Central government, as TMC is leading protest against Centre's demonetisation move.

Supporting the TMC's statement, WBPCC President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday said, "Time of the arrest is really very suspicious and fishy."

"When several opposition parties are fighting jointly against Modi government's demonetisation move, this arrest has been made, might be to crack oppositions' unity," Chowdhury  said, during a press conference here in Kolkata.

Earlier on Tuesday, Adhir Chowdhury called Sudip Bandyopadhyay's arrest a major development by CBI in its ongoing probe into Rose Valley financial scam.

Meanwhile, expelled TMC MP Kunal Ghosh, who was in custody for years in connection with Saradha Chit fund scam, on Wednesday said that Sudip Bandyopadhyay's arrest was not a political revenge of BJP-led NDA government in Centre.

"After I demanded CBI probe into Saradha scam, West Bengal police arrested me and harassed me for years, that was a political revenge," Kunal Ghosh told the media.

"Where were they, who are calling Sudip Bandyopadhyay's arrest a political vendetta, when I was victimized politically," Ghosh, who is currently free on bail, said.
