Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced the extension of the restrictions imposed in the state to curb COVID-19 spread till Jun 15.

The restrictions were initially called by the government for 15 days till May 30.

Banerjee has cleared there will be no total lockdown in the state.

"Please do not call it a lockdown. Curfew and lockdown are different Acts. We have imposed restrictions without affecting the business," Banerjee said, at state headquarters Nabanna in the evening.

"The (COVID-19) cases have also come down slightly due to the restrictions so we want to take some more time," she added.

The Chief Minister has introduced a couple of relaxations in the second phase of restrictions.

She said 40 per cent, instead of earlier 30 per cent, workforce will be allowed in Jute industries, as per the requests by the Punjab government.

Also construction workers in industries have been allowed to work only if vaccinated.

West Bengal on Thursday added 16,225 new infections while 153 people died apparently due to the virus.
