Woman dies after being set ablaze inside train

Kozhikode, Oct 21 (IBNS): In a gruesome incident, a woman died after she was set ablaze by an unidentified man inside the coach of a stationary train at Kannur railway station in Kerala, media reported.

According to reports, the incident happened during the wee hours on Tuesday.

Police said, a man emptied a liquor bottle on her and set her on fire inside a compartment on the Kannur-Ernakulam Executive Express.

The incident occurred a little before 5 am, when the train was about to start. It has been learnt that there were no other passenger in the compartment when the incident happened.

Eye-witnesses said the woman was seen running out of the compartment screaming.

At least two seats in the compartment were burnt.

The woman who hails from Malappuram district was rushed to Kannur district hospital with serious burn injuries, and later shifted to Kozhikode hospital, where she succumed to her injuries on Tuesday morning.

As per information received, some commuters have given the statement that there was a fight between the man and the woman.

Police said, the man allegedly slipped away in the crowd.

Railway Police have registered a case of murder and are looking for the man.

The police have found the liquor bottle.

A bag and a knife were also recovered from the compartment.

Railway officials said, the affected compartment was detached and then the train left after much delay.

Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said, "High level inquiry ordered under the superintendent of police to probe the incident. Security has been beefed up at railway stations. We are asking railways to put women compartment in the middle of the train and install more CCTV cameras."
