Won't attribute any statement to SC in future: Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi, Apr 22 (UNI) Expressing regret over his remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday told the Supreme Court that he would abstain from attributing any statements to the court, in future.
Filing his reply in the apex court to the contempt plea filed against him by BJP Parliamentarian Meenakshi Lekhi, Gandhi said that his statements were 'misused' by his political opponents and that he had made the statement in the heat of the election campaign.
He said it is unfortunate that slogan got intertwined with reference to the SC order.
The apex court bench, headed by Chief Justice (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, will hear the matter on Tuesday.
During a media interaction in Amethi, the AICC chief had claimed that the apex court's order has made it 'clear' that 'Chowkidar Chor Hai' (Prime Minister is thief) in its Rafale order.
Challenging this statement, Lekhi had filed a plea before the apex court and sought criminal contempt against Mr Gandhi for his alleged derogatory remarks against the Prime Minister.
In his 19-page affidavit, Gandhi stated that Rafale continues to be one of the prominent political, social issues of the country. On the other hand, Modi and other Ministers claimed that SC had given a clean chit to the government.
In his affidavit, Gandhi further claimed that he was relying on social media reports, apart from versions of Congress workers and activists. He also stated that it is obvious that no court would either adopt, or endorse a political slogan.
