New Delhi, Aug 12 (IBNS): In more power for the country's ruling party, wrestler Babita Phogat and her father Mahavir Singh joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday.

Babita and Mahavir joined the BJP in presence of Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and other party leaders.

Joining the BJP, Babita said, "I always wanted to join the party. Now I am very happy to join. Particularly after the abrogation of Article 370, I have become more than just a fan of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Our Prime Minister took a historic step. Due to the step, I feel all Indians are happy and they would also like to join the BJP."

Rijiju said, "Babita Phogat has remained an inspiration for the young generation. She can also continue with her sport even after joining politics like Mary Kom. I am sure Babita will work for sports apart from working for the nation and party. Being the Sports minister, I will utilise Babita's talent to develop sports.

Babita, 29, won gold medals in the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games.

She had won silver medals in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at the 2012 World Wrestling Championships.
