Lucknow, Dec 6 (IBNS): Three days after police officer Subodh Kumar Singh was killed by a frenzied mob over reports of cow slaughter in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday met the family of the slain inspector.

Singh's family flew down from Etah to Lucknow to meet Adityanath on Thursday.

Adityanath had received widespread criticism after he ordered arrests over cow slaughter but remained mum on cop killing. The main accused in the incident, which took place on Monday, is a Bajrang Dal activist.

The policeman was allegedly shot dead by the mob, according to an NDTV report which said the violence was sparked by reports of discovery of 25 carcasses of cows near the police station.

A villager was also killed in the violence in which several other cops were seriously injured.

Several vehicles were burnt down while the police station was set ablaze, said reports and video footage of the incident.

One report said the slain police inspector Singh was the investigating officer in the Mohammad Akhlaq lynching case of Dadri in 2015.

On September 28, 2015, a mob had allegedly barged into the house of Mohammad Akhlaq in Dadri over suspicion of stealing and slaughtering cow and in the assault he later died.

Bulandshahr district magistrate Anuj Jha has confirmed that Kumar died from bullet injuries in his head, reports said.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the cow slaughter and the mob violence.

Adityanath has also announced a compensation of Rs. 40 lakh for the dead police officer's wife and Rs. 10 lakh for his parents along with a job for a family member.
