You are bound to do it: Mamata Banerjee's social media diktat for TMC leaders 'to counter fake videos'

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday directed Trinamool Congress functionaries to join or be active on social media "to counter fake videos" amid the massive public ire her administration is facing over the handling of the RG Kar rape-murder case.

Speaking at a mega event of her party Trinamool Congress, Mamata said, "I would like to ask all my leaders, why are you not on social media? All leaders will have to be active on social media just like the party is. You are bound to do it.

"All MLAs, MPs, councillors, youth and student leaders have to counter fake videos on social media and file complaints with police."

In a couple of previous rallies earlier this month, Mamata had lashed out at the alleged fake videos which she claimed was being circulated on social media over the RG Kar case where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the country and ignited pan-India public fury and protests.

The social media has remained buzzing with protest videos over the rape-murder that has brought the Mamata Banerjee government under the scanner over its slow progress and alleged cover-up until the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation by the Calcutta High Court.

"Do you know what AI is? It is a cyber-crime, the biggest crime of the time. Even if I haven't said something, fake videos of me saying something through AI can be spread on social media," the Chief Minister had said earlier.

A 31-year-old trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which is located in North Kolkata's Belgachia area, sending shockwaves across the country and triggering pan-India outrage.

One person, a civic volunteer, has been arrested in connection with the case but protesting students as well as the victim's parents suspect more people are involved in the case.
