Young Kolkata cricketer dies of suspected cardiac arrest on field

Kolkata, Jan 15 (IBNS): A 21-year-old cricketer died of suspected cardiac arrest while practicing in a north Kolkata ground on Tuesday afternoon, reports said.

According to reports, promising all-rounder Aniket Sharma, who hailed from Kharagpur in West Medinipur district of West Bengal and was playing for Paikpara Sporting Club for last 11 months, suddenly fell on the ground during a practice session at the club ground at around 12 pm.

"A day ahead of Kolkata Cricket League's game between Paikpara Sporting Club and Milan Samiti, a practice match was underway at our club's ground and while taking a short-run, middle-order southpaw Aniket Sharma, who could bowl right-arm off spin, suddenly fell senseless to the ground," a member of Paikpara Sporting Club and eyewitness of the incident told IBNS.

The youth was rushed to R.G.Kar Memorial hospital nearby where he was declared dead.

Local police said that after registering an unnatural death (UD) case at Tala Police Station, police begun an investigation into the incident while body of the 21-year-old had been sent for post-mortem.

"Primarily, doctors are suspecting that the young cricketer died of cardiac arrest and it could be confirmed after getting the reports of post-mortem," a local police official told IBNS.

Aniket Sharma is survived by his father and mother.
