Kolkata/IBNS: Bengali actress Anusha Viswanathan was handed over the crucial role of Apu's sister Durga by director Anik Dutta in his upcoming film Aparajito, which is based on legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray's struggles to make his debut film Pather Panchali.

Interacting with India Blooms at one corner of the film centre Nandan on a hot summer afternoon, Viswanathan, who is Uma in Aparajito, says, "I had connected to her (Durga) loneliness to an extent and the moment when she enjoys her freedom as referred to the scene where she gets drenched.

"I could connect to her innocence, maturity and the care for her brother and family."

Aparajito, which is also the title of the second installment in The Apu Trilogy, stars actor Jeetu Kamal as Ray with actress Saayoni Ghosh as his onscreen wife.

On her research work to play the epic character, Viswanathan says, "I definitely watched the film (Pather Panchali) again and also the specific scenes which we had to recreate.

"We would constantly check them and try to recreate them as close to the original as possible. We tried to remember the minutest of details."

Dutta's film is slated for May 13 release.
