India pays tribute to iconic singer Lata Mangeshkar, PM Modi says 'she leaves a void in our nation'

Tributes poured in for India's singing sensation Lata Mangeshkar who passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 92 leaving her fans and the entire nation mourning.

Lata Mangeshkar passed away at 8.12 am at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital where she was treated for coronavirus disease.

Two days of national mourning will be observed in the memory of the legendary singer. As a mark of respect to the Bharat Ratna awardee, the National Flag will fly at half-mast for two days.

The last rites of Lata Mangeshkar will be performed with full state honours at Shivaji Park around 6:30 pm. Prime Minister Narendra modi is likely to attend the funeral, said reports.

As her countless fans grieved, PM Narendra Modi was the first to join the nation in paying his tributes to the legendary singer.

In his message, PM Modi said the singing legend leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people, he said.

Lata Didi’s songs brought out a variety of emotions. She closely witnessed the transitions of the Indian film world for decades. Beyond films, she was always passionate about India’s growth. She always wanted to see a strong and developed India," PM Modi said.

In an emotional tweet, President Ram Nah Kovind wrote: "Lata-ji’s demise is heart-breaking for me, as it is for millions the world over. In her vast range of songs, rendering the essence and beauty of India, generations found expression of their inner-most emotions. A Bharat Ratna, Lata-ji’s accomplishments will remain incomparable."

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu tweeted: "I am extremely saddened by the demise of Lata Mangeshkar Ji, the Nightingale of Indian Cinema and legendary singer. India has lost its voice in the death of Lata ji, who has enthralled music lovers in India & across the globe with her mellifluous & sublime voice for many decades."

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condoled the demise and tweeted: "Received the sad news of Lata Mangeshkar ji’s demise. She remained the most beloved voice of India for many decades. Her golden voice is immortal and will continue to echo in the hearts of her fans. My condolences to her family, friends and fans."

Legendary music composer AR Rahman also tweeted his tributes for the departed soul.

US Embassy in India also joined the county in mourning the veteran singer's death. "We join India in paying tribute to legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who passed today at the age of 92! History will mark her contribution to India’s music in golden words!"

External Affair Minister S Jaishankar wrote: "Deeply saddened by the passing away of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar ji. She was the voice of the country ever since I can remember. This is truly the end of an era."

West Bengal Chief Minister in her condolence message wrote: "I pay my heart-felt tribute to the departed icon of India, Bharatratna Lata Mangeshkar."

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan tweeted: "Deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary singer, #LataMangeshkar. She was an unparalleled musician who has left an indelible mark on the history of Indian music. Her contributions will be remembered forever. Heartfelt condolences to her bereaved family and friends."

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksha tweeted: "Rest In Peace Nightingale of #India, #LataMangeshkar. Thank you for the decades of entertainment that transcended borders & gave life to the phrase ‘music is a universal language.’ My deepest condolences to her family & the people of India. Her memory will live through her music."

Indian cricket team's former skipper Virat Kohli also paid his tribute. "Deeply saddened to hear about the demise of Lata ji. Her melodious songs touched millions of people around the world. Thank you for all the music and the memories. My deepest condolences to the family & the loved ones," he wrote.

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar tweeted his condolence.

"Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hain, Gar Yaad Rahe…and how can one forget such a voice! Deeply saddened by the passing away of Lata Mangeshkar ji, my sincere condolences and prayers. Om Shanti," he wrote.

Singer Shreya Ghosal in her tribute wrote: "Feeling numb. Devastated. Yesterday was Saraswati Puja & today Ma took her blessed one with her. Somehow it feels that even the birds, trees & wind are silent today. Swar Kokila Bharat Ratna #LataMangeshkar ji your divine voice will echo till eternity. Rest in peace. Om Shanti."
