My first tryst with Goopy Gyne was in class two : Abir
Kolkata, July 7 (IBNS) Having first been introduced to the 'Bhooter Raja Dilo Bar' timeless track when he was a student of class two, popular Tollywood actor Abir Chatterjee senses the same fantasy element in the track 'Jamer Raja Dilo Bar' in a new age romantic comedy where he is pitted with actors Payel Sarkar and Rajatava Dutta.
"I won't say the film 'Jamer Raja Dilo Bar', bearing the same name as the title track, reinvents the same magic of 'Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne'.
But with Anupam Roy's music and Shilajit's playback, with Ronieda's (Rajatava Dutta's) whacky humour, there are elements of nostalgia in the film which is rooted but contemporary," Abir tells IBNS on the sets of the film at Dasani Studio.
"Anupam has charted a totally different genre of music here, a shift from his usual style as well as different from the genre of Anup Ghosal who was behind the success of Goopy Bagha. But soaking the atmosphere of this set and listening to Anupam's tracks takes you back to the time when fantasy ruled the roost in our films," Abir says.
Abir, who enacts a Devdas-type character in the film having no grey shades, says he is the only 'right man' in feminist writer Riya Chattoraj (Payel Sarkar's) life, who is a man hater, but why and how the equations change and the Death God appears in their life remains a mystery.
About paired opposite Payel, the svelte actress having woowed audiences both in Chotuskone and Jamai 420, Abir says, "We had worked in five films and our pair has been well accepted."
"It is very difficult to comprehend the psyche of heroines. It is tricky to judge a female mind. So I better not hazard a guess whether I have been liked by my female leads in various films including Payel and if I top their list of favourites. If we are accepted by the audiences that matters more," Abir says with a wink.
Director Abir Sengupta, who recalls how the namesake factor created hilarious situations, affirms it is a surreal romcom.
"I am not bogged down by the thought of the film not succeeding well after release. I am making a film based on my own story which retains my Bengaliness in probash (outside Bengal). I am happy with the caste, all talented actors. I hope it clicks once released," the Mumbai-based director says when asked if he is not concerned over many Bengali
films failing miserably at box office.
Produced by Pramod Films and Anushree Mehta, Jomer Raja Dilo Bar will be released by this September.
