New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday remembered legendary Indian playback singer Mukesh on his 100th birth anniversary.

PM Modi remembered Mukesh as “the maestro of melody” and said that the singer left an indelible mark on Indian music.

The Prime Minister tweeted: "Remembering the maestro of melody, Mukesh, on his 100th birth anniversary. His timeless songs evoke a wide range of emotions and have left an indelible mark on Indian music. His golden voice and soul-stirring renditions will continue to enchant generations."

Mukesh’s full name was Mukesh Chand Mathur but he gained popularity mononymously.

Mukesh is considered to be one of the most popular and acclaimed playback singers in the Hindi film industry.

Though he was nominated numerous times for various awards, his song "Kai Baar Yuhi Dekha Hai" from the film Rajnigandha (1973) won him the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer.

Mukesh was also popular as being the voice of the leading Bollywood heroes of his time—Raj Kapoor, Manoj Kumar, Feroz Khan, Sunil Dutt and Dilip Kumar.

His rendition of sad songs gave him unique popularity among hundreds of his other popular numbers from Hindi cinema.
