Former Bollywood actress Zaira Wasim, who had grabbed a massive public attention for her roles in Dangal and Secret Superstar, has announced her marriage on social media.

Zaira, who quit films citing religion, shared a few pictures with her husband on Instagram as the two completed nikaah.

Zaira made her film debut with the role of wrestler Geeta Phogat in Aamir Khan starrer biographical sports film Dangal (2016), which emerged as the highest grossing Indian film.

She rose to prominence by starring as an aspiring singer in the musical drama Secret Superstar (2017), which also ranks among the highest-grossing Indian films.

Her performances in both films earned her critical acclaim as well as several awards, including the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for the former and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for the latter.

Zaira Wasim quit Bollywood in June 2019, citing that acting conflicted with her religious beliefs and faith.

In a detailed post on social media, she explained that while she was grateful for the opportunities she received, her work in the film industry had gradually taken her away from her faith and her relationship with Allah.

She wrote that her career was not aligned with her "imaan" (faith) and that continuing in it would be inconsistent with her religious identity.

She said in a nutshell, "Though I may fit here perfectly, I do not belong here. This field indeed brought me a lot of love, support, and fame, but it also led me to a path of ignorance, as I silently and unconsciously transitioned out of imaan (faith)."

After her decision, she stepped away from public life and stopped attending film promotions or events.

Her last film was The Sky Is Pink (2019) alongside Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar.
