US singer Tom Petty dies of cardiac arrest at 66

California, Oct 3 (IBNS): US veteran singer Tom Petty has died of cardiac arrest at an age of 66, media reports said.

Petty's family has informed about the singer's death in a statement.

The singer suffered a cardiac arrest at his Malibu residence on Monday. Though Petty was taken to hospital, he could not survive.

Petty's manager, Tony Dimitriades, was quoted by BBC: "He died peacefully at 20:40 Pacific time (03:40 GMT Tuesday) surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends."

The singer is famous for his songs like American Girl, Breakdown, Free Fallin', Learning to Fly and Refugee.

He was the lead singer of the band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
