India announces T20 WC 2026 squad: Shubman Gill misses out, Axar Patel back as vice-captain

Mumbai/IBNS: India’s selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, delivered a surprise-packed squad announcement for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, leaving out Shubman Gill and reinstating Axar Patel as vice-captain.

The decisions underline a clear shift towards combinations and role clarity as India prepare to defend their title on home soil.

Gill dropped

Gill’s exclusion emerged as the most striking takeaway from the squad announcement.

Despite being one of India’s most dependable batters across formats and the team’s designated vice-captain in recent months, the Punjab batter found himself outside the 15-man squad.

Agarkar acknowledged Gill’s quality but explained that the call stemmed from team balance rather than individual merit.

He pointed to recent form and tactical requirements, stressing that sacrifices were inevitable when finalising a compact World Cup squad.

Axar Patel back in leadership role

Axar Patel’s return as vice-captain marks a quiet but significant shift in leadership thinking.

The all-rounder, who previously held the role before Gill’s elevation during the Asia Cup, is valued for his versatility and composure in pressure situations.

His presence strengthens India’s all-round core, especially for subcontinental conditions where spin and lower-order batting depth often decide matches.

Ishan Kishan returns, Jitesh misses out

Ishan Kishan’s inclusion as a second wicketkeeper adds firepower at the top of the order.

The left-hander earned his recall after a prolific Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign, where he amassed 517 runs for Jharkhand.

This selection meant Jitesh Sharma made way, as the team management leaned towards a combination that allows a wicketkeeper to open or bat high up the order, offering flexibility through the innings.

Captain SKY defends team balance

Captain Suryakumar Yadav backed the selection strategy, dismissing suggestions that Gill’s omission was purely form-driven.

He reiterated that the think-tank wanted a top-order keeper and specific finishing options lower down, shaping the final composition.

Surya also addressed his own extended lean patch with the bat, expressing confidence in rediscovering form and contributing decisively during the tournament.

Strong all-round depth and bowling variety

India’s squad reflects a deliberate focus on balance.

The presence of Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar ensures multiple bowling options without compromising batting depth.

The bowling attack blends pace and spin effectively, with Jasprit Bumrah leading the unit, supported by Arshdeep Singh’s left-arm pace and the spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav, offering contrasting styles.

No standby players

With the tournament set to be played at home and co-hosted by Sri Lanka, the BCCI opted against naming standby players.

The same squad will feature in the five-match T20 series against New Zealand starting January 21, serving as final preparation ahead of the World Cup opener on February 7.

As India gear up to defend the title won in 2024 under Rohit Sharma, the squad selection signals a willingness to make tough calls in pursuit of clarity and cohesion.

India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 and the five-match series against New Zealand: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Axar Patel (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Ishan Kishan (wk).
