US Open 2017: Maria Sharapova returns to Grand Slam with victory against Simona Halep

New York, Aug 29 (IBNS): Russian tennis icon Maria Sharapova made a strong comeback to the Grand Slam as she defeated world number two Simona Halep in the US Open 2017 on Monday.

Sharapova, who played her first match after the doping-ban imposed on her in 2016, outplayed Halep 6-4 4-6 6-3.

The former world number one entered into the US Open with a wild card as she is currently ranked at 146th.

She was suspended in 2016 after failing to pass the dope test.

After the emphatic win, Sharapova tweeted to express her joy. She said:"New York, WOW!! How can I sleep after this! @usopen."
