More foreign tourists visited India in the beginning of 2016 than in 2015
During Jan-Mar 2015, India had seen a marginal rise of 3.5 per cent in Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) over Jan-Mar 2014. But in the first three months in 2016, India recorded a 10 per cent increase from the same period in 2015.
Between Jan and Mar in 2016, 25.08 lakh foreign tourists arrived in India compared to 22.81 lakh during the same period in 2015.
By percentage share, in Mar 2016, Bangladesh (with 14.7 per cent) topped the list of 15 countries surveyed followed by the UK, USA, Germany, Canada, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Russian Federation, China, France, Australia, Japan, Nepal, Singapore and Thailand.
Of the 15 port of arrivals surveyed in Mar 2016, Delhi Airport (with 33.82 per cent) saw the maximum number of arrivals. Mumbai, second on the list, recorded 15.97 per cent.
Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) during in March 2016 were Rs 13,115 crore, up from Rs 11,133 crore in March 2015 and Rs 10,479 crore in March 2014.
In rupee terms, FEEs from tourism during January- March 2016 were Rs 40,411 crore compared to Rs 34,875 crore during January- March 2015.
In US dollar terms, FEEs from tourism during January- March 2016 were US$ 5.986 billion compared to US$ 5.605 billion during January- March 2015.
