After Hindu lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard, now Indian-origin US senator Kamala Harris to run for US President

Washington, Jan 22 (IBNS):  Kamala Harris, the Democratic senator from California, on Monday announced that she will be running for the US presidency.

Significantly, she will be the first Indian-American woman and only the second African-American woman to do so.

Harris made the announcement on Twitter by posting: "I'm running for president. Let's do this together. Join us: http://kamalaharris.org ."

"The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values," the Democratic California senator said. "That's why I'm running for president of the United States. "I'm running to lift those voices, to bring our voices together."

Harris, 54, is a former prosecutor and has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration.

Kamala has a deep Indian connection as she is the daughter of an Indian mother, Syamala Gopalan, from Chennai, and Jamaican father, Donald Harris.

She further said on Twitter: "Join me in Oakland on Sunday, January 27 for our first rally to kick off the campaign. Looking forward to seeing everyone there."

Meanwhile, the theme of her campaign has been revealed as "Kamala Harris: For the People".

Hindu politician Tulsi Gabbard had made a similar announcement earlier:

US Democratic lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard, who is the first Hindu member of the Congress and is considered close to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said she will run for President next year, media reports said.

"I have decided to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week," the Hawaii Democrat told CNN.

Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran, is currently serving the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Besides being a Hindu, she is also the first American Samoan to be a member of the Congress.

"There are a lot of reasons for me to make this decision. There are a lot of challenges that are facing the American people that I'm concerned about and that I want to help solve," she told CNN, listing health care access, criminal justice reform and climate change as key platform issues.

"There is one main issue that is central to the rest, and that is the issue of war and peace," Gabbard added. "I look forward to being able to get into this and to talk about it in depth when we make our announcement."
