Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina to address UNGA today

Dhaka/UNI: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be virtually addressing the 75th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Saturday.

The Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim on Friday informed that Hasina's pre-recorded statement would be played at the UNGA general debate in the UN Headquarters approximately at 2000 hrs Bangladesh local time.

Like every year, the PM would delivering the speech in Bangla following the footsteps of her illustrious father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he added.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made history by delivering the first Bangla speech at the United Nations at the 29th UNGA on September 25, 1974.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr A K Abdul Momen said at a virtual press briefing on September 21 that the COVID-19 pandemic, Rohingya crisis and climate change would be the major subjects that would feature in the PM's speech.

Momen elaborated that Hasina will raise climate issues as the President of Calamite Vulnerable Forum (CVF), on the COVID situation she would stress on equal distribution of potential vaccine and pandemic impact on migrant workers and remittance.

The foreign minister said that the prime minister will urge the international community to continue their efforts in resolving the Rohignya issue in line with her four-point proposal that she had placed before the 74th UNGA last year regarding a durable solution of the crisis.

As per the Bangladesh Post other topics that are likely to feature in her address include highlighting Bangladesh’s successes in containing COVID-19, Sustainable Development Goals(SDG) implementation, ensuring women empowerment and rights, poverty elevation, anti-terrorism and anti-drug trafficking activities, economic advancement, sustainable democracy and good governance and maintenance of world peace.
