New York, Dec 11 (IBNS): A Bangladeshi-origin man inspired by the Islamic State has been identified to be responsible for the explosion that hit New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal on Monday, media reports said.

In what is believed as an "attempted terrorist attack", four persons have been left injured including the attacker himself.

The attacker, identified as Akayed Ullah, was an immigrant who came to the United States from Bangladesh seven years ago.

He lived in Brooklyn, said reports.

The suspect reportedly was admitted in hospital and then detained by police.

Soon after the attack, city Mayor Bill de Blasio called the incident as an 'attempted terrorist attack'.

Blasio tweeted: "Let's be clear – this was an attempted terrorist attack. Thank God the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goals. Our first responders were there quickly and the only injuries we know of right now are minor."

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo visited the scene of the incident and tweeted: "I am at the scene of the incident at the Port Authority Bus Terminal and have been briefed by law enforcement."

New York City Fire Department tweeted: "Update: A total of 4 injuries reported at the scene of an explosion at Port Authority. All injuries are non-life-threatening."

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted to inform that US President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident.

New York Police Department tweeted: "Update regarding explosion at 42nd St and 8th Ave, in subway: One male suspect is in custody. No injuries other than suspect at this time. Avoid the area. Subways bypassing #PortAuthority and Times Square Stations. Info is preliminary."

New York Police Department said the attacker was wearing an improvised low-tech explosive device attached to his body.

NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill was quoted as saying by WABC channel: "Preliminary investigation at the scene indicates that this male was wearing an improvised low-tech explosive device attached to his body. He intentionally detonated that device."

As per WABC report, the suspect has been identified as 27-year-old Akayed Ullah, who is from Bangladesh and has been in the country for seven years.
