Benjamin Netanyahu meets Donald Trump, nominates him for Nobel Peace Prize

Israel's PM Benjamin Netanyahu has nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Netanyahu handed over the letter of nomination to Trump during their official meeting in the US.

“He’s forging peace, as we speak, in one country, in one region after the other,” Netanyahu told Trump as quoted by CNN as he reached over the table to present Trump with his document.

“So, I want to present to you, Mr. President, the letter I sent to the Nobel Prize Committee; it’s nominating you for the Peace Prize, which is well deserved, and you should get it," he said.

This was the first meeting between the two leaders since the US launched  strikes on Iran’s nuclear program.

The strikes were launched during the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran.

After receiving the nomination from Netanyahu, Trump said: "Coming from you, in particular, this is very meaningful. Thank you very much."

The Israeli PM arrived in Washington on Monday attend a private dinner with Trump.

The meeting took place amid the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.

Meanwhile, Israel and Hamas held indirect talks in Qatar for a second day on Monday.

The meeting reportedly aimed at securing a ceasefire and a captive deal in Gaza.

The US President earlier said a deal could be reached this week.

Gaza Crisis

The UN Secretary-General is “appalled” by the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as civilians face yet another wave of mass displacement with few safe places to go.

Multiple attacks in recent days have killed and injured scores of Palestinians at sites hosting displaced people and others attempting to access essential supplies, according to a statement from UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric on Thursday.

“The Secretary-General strongly condemns the loss of civilian life,” Dujarric said.

On just one day this week, nearly 30,000 people were forced to flee under new Israeli relocation orders, with no safe place to go and clearly inadequate supplies of shelter, food, medicine or water, he added.
