Havana, Mar 27 (Xinhua/UNI) Britain's Prince Charles on Tuesday attended the ceremony of laying the first stone of a solar farm at the Special Development Zone of Mariel (ZEDM), as part of his visit to Cuba.

This will be the first solar farm at the ZEDM, about 45 km west of Havana. It will be built by the Mariel Solar SA, a UK corporation with a Cuban subsidiary.

Andrew McDonald, director of Mariel Solar SA, said that it will be the first large-scale farm in Cuba and the largest in the region in terms of energy contribution.

Cuban Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, Rodrigo Malmierca, stressed that the relations between Havana and London enjoy "a new moment", with the materialization of projects that will contribute to the development of the domestic economy.

The British prince, accompanied by his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, became the first British royals to visit Cuba.

Earlier on Monday, the British royal couple toured Havana's Old Town, dubbed a World Heritage Site by the United Nations in 1982. The couple also unveiled a statue of British playwright William Shakespeare.

The Cuba visit is part of their 12-day Caribbean tour, which has already taken them to Saint Lucia, Barbados, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada.
