Canada: Federal government planning to impose new restrictions to curb gun violence
Ottawa, Aug 9 (IBNS): In the wake of several mass shootings in the country, the federal government in Canada is planning to impose some new restrictions to curb gun violence, media reports said.
The restrictions will be imposed in certain parts of the country.
Bill Blair, the new minister of border security and reducing organised crime, said the new measures will help to reduce the gun violence.
Blair has been quoted by CTV News as saying, "This is a significant concern for Canadians."
"The concern that currently exists in places like Toronto, Surrey, B.C., and other parts of Canada requires that we examine the issue and deal with it in a comprehensive way."
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has asked Blair to conduct analysis to examine what new steps can be taken.
On Aug 2, New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh had urged Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to allow cities to put a ban on handguns to curb violence in the country.
Singh also added that the federal government must invest $100 million per year on efforts to combat gang violence.
Also the NDP leader mentioned funds should be utilised to curb the cross-border guns smuggling. In that case, more resources should be given to the Canada Border Services Agency, said Singh.
The NDP leader, however, does not approve more policing as a long term solution to gun violence. He believes more policing will create mistrust between police and radicalised communities, indigenous people and those struggling with mental illness.
The shooting, which took place at Danforth Avenue on July 22, claimed two lives and left 13 people injured.
Ontario police watchdog Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has identified the man behind Sunday’s shooting rampage as Faisal Hussain, 29.
The police said Hussain was found dead, with a gunshot wound, after an encounter with officers.
