Ottawa, July 9 (IBNS): Ahead of the commencement of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Summit in Belgium, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau headed to Latvia on Monday morning.

Trudeau took to Twitter to say, "Wheels up this morning - busy week ahead. Heading to Latvia this morning before the @NATO Summit in Brussels."

The PM is likely to meet the Canadian troops in Latvia.

Days ago, Trudeau had said Canada is committed to the alliance.

In a tweet, the PM had said: "Canada is strongly committed to the @NATO alliance, and to our unity on defence & security. My thanks to Secretary General @JensStoltenberg for a productive phone call today ahead of next week’s summit in Brussels."

The summit will be held on July 11 and 12 in Brussels, the capital city of Belgium.

Canada, along with 11 other countries, founded NATO in 1949 on the fundamental values of democracy, individual liberty, human rights, and the rule of law.

Trudeau is likely to discuss trans-Atlantic security issues and challenges with other NATO leaders, including how to work together to strengthen the international rules-based order and protect citizens.
